My Creative Empowerment work is about the everyday struggles of the teenage girl. They often feel voiceless and look to alternative methods to fill the void of their pain. I created this poem, mostly from personal experience and from things I have seen go on in school. The message I hope my work displays is that you don’t need to be saved. You are not just a piece of meat to be hunted, you are a person who deserves to be themselves. Hopefully teenage girls especially, would receive this message because it is one I needed to hear. It is one everyone should hear.
I am not a horse that you can ride upon a saddle.
I break down to the bone,
And I cry into the phone.
I am a stream that flows into the big ocean.
Searching, hoping for a notion.
When you see what I do on the TV,
You try to be everything you can be.
Sometimes you lose yourself,
Trying to prove yourself.
When you look in the mirror,
Nothing becomes clearer.
The bruises, the cuts, the scrapes,
They form countless, countless shapes.
Self-inflicted medicine
Searching for a bit of adrenaline.
So you take a drug
Trying not to gag
You became what you swore you wouldn't,
All because of everything you thought you couldn't.
You're the kid they warned you about.
Because of you they are filled with doubt.
But you got out.
You fought the drought.
You're the one they're afraid of,
The one who didn't need love.
Because when you were alone,
You became your own hero.
And I finally don't need any more saving.
